Story

It was a privilege for ‘Muzzafarian’ to welcome a visit from Her Excellency, Madam Irina Bokova to Sekolah Menengah Sains Muzaffar Syah (MOZAC), Melaka on the 23 May 2013. She was on her two days visit to Melaka to see the UNESCO World Heritage in Bandar Hilir. SKUM has arranged her visit to MOZAC to see the activity of UNESCO Club which link to the ASPnet School of Europe and Asia. The honourable visitor was welcomed with ‘kompang’ to the Sultan Muzaffar Syah Hall accompanied by some UNESCO delegates as well as Sate Educational Officials, Encik Megat Nasir b. Megat Hashim, officers from SKUM and Officers from Boarding School and Excellence School Division, MOE of Malaysia.
Her Excellency Madam Irina Bokova gave an appealing speech and mentioned that she enjoyed the warm welcome by all Mozac students and teachers. After the souvenirs presentation, she went to the exhibition booth in the hall and was briefed on our UNESCO’S Club and ASEF ClassNet Online Collaboration “Somewhere Out There”.

This Online Collaboration is about an investigative journey to seek out that special place, where familiar faces frequent, beautiful stories are born and ties are strengthened. The students investigated places in their community and explore the reasons why these places were special and significant in their lives. The students then presented these places on a ‘Virtual Tourist’ page to their friends as spots worth visiting. The cross-cultural aspect of this Online Collaboration is a creative response on the virtual journey that their partners had designed on the ‘Virtual Tourist’ website. Melaka, being recognized as UNESCO World Heritage City has given a good opportunity for Mozac students to explore and introduce our own unique historical sites.

The students have chosen ‘The Stadhuys’ building also known as the Red Square is a historical structure situated in the heart of Malacca Town. All in all, Her Excellency Madam Irina Bokova was pleased to view the video clips prepared by the students and commented positively on their hopes for the project.

Indeed, this visit is a rare opportunity to enhance the relationship between the school’s UNESCO CLUB and the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. We were able to show a glimpse of the multicultural society in Melaka as well as our unique Melaka heritage. Besides, we also shared our triumphs in R&D and the activities carried out by Mozac UNESCO Club. The visit ended with tea and scrumptious delicacy from Melaka.
