Story

In July 2010, 9 students and 2 accompanying teachers of Al-Azhar Islamic Senior High School 3 (known as SMA Islam Al-AZHAR 3), Jakarta visited St. Mark’s Senior Secondary Public School, Meera Bagh, New Delhi to start a face-to-face program between the two schools. The establishment of the partnership was initiated by two teachers from the two schools, Ms Wati Wardani and Ms Geeta Rajan who met each other during 8th ASEF Classroom Network Conference in Sønderborg, Denmark in October 2009 organised by the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF).

From 12- 22 January 2011, two Al-Azhar schools hosted 19 students and 2 accompanying teachers of St. Mark’s Schools. SMA Islam Al-Azhar 3 hosted the students and the teacher of St. Mark’s Senior Secondary Public School, Meera Bagh while Al-Azhar JHS 2 hosted the students and the teacher of St. Mark’s Girls Secondary School.

During the 10-day program, the participants were exposed to various activities in schools as well as outside schools. They learnt traditional dance, martial arts and arts and gave presentations to classes on – having a dialogue on peace, exploring the city life, visiting museum, historical and cultural heritage, places of interests and many more.

The Face-to-Face Exchange Program had been one of the most effective ways to promote better understanding, tolerance of other cultures as well as improving language and life skills needed by students, to be successful to confront global challenges.
